The short version. This site sets no cookies, stores nothing on your device, and loads nothing from any other company. We count how many people visit and how many click through to buy the book — nothing more. There is no way for us to work out who you are, and nothing here is shared with advertisers or sold to anyone.
This page explains exactly what happens when you visit the Global Guardians site. It is written to be read rather than skimmed past, so it describes the actual mechanism instead of reserving rights we don't use.
No cookies, and no consent banner
We don't set cookies. We don't use local storage, session storage, or any other way of keeping a file on your device. We don't fingerprint your browser, and there is no advertising or social-media code anywhere on the page. That is why you were not asked to accept anything when you arrived — there is nothing to consent to.
The site also loads no third-party resources at all. Fonts, images and scripts are all served from this site's own domain, so no other company sees your visit or receives your IP address.
(One narrow exception, stated for completeness: a private administrative page uses a login cookie. It is only ever set for the site owner signing in to view the visitor counts, and never for anyone browsing the site.)
What we actually record
Two things are recorded: a page view when the page loads, and a buy click when someone follows a link to buy the book. Each one stores the following:

Note what is not in that list: no name, no email address, no account, no stored IP address, no full referring URL, no mouse movement, no scroll tracking, no session recording, and no profile that follows you anywhere.
How visits are counted without identifying you
To tell forty visits by one person from one visit by forty people, each visit is given a short pseudonym. It is produced by taking your IP address and browser user-agent, combining them with today's date and a secret key held only by this server, and running the result through a one-way cryptographic hash.
Three consequences follow, and they are the whole point of doing it this way:
- Your IP address is never written down. It is used for a moment to compute the hash and then discarded. It is not in the database and not in any log we keep.
- The pseudonym changes every day. Because the date is part of the recipe, today's value and tomorrow's are unrelated, so visits cannot be linked from one day to the next.
- It cannot be reversed or matched elsewhere. The hash cannot be turned back into your IP address, and because the secret key is unique to this site, the value is meaningless to anyone else.
The practical effect is that we can say "about 200 people visited on Tuesday" and never "this person visited on Tuesday."
Where the data is kept, and for how long
The site runs on Fly.io and the counts are stored in a Turso database. Both act purely as infrastructure providers on our behalf and neither uses the data for their own purposes.
Records are kept while they remain useful for understanding how the book is finding its readers. Because entries carry no identifier that persists beyond a single day, older data becomes pure statistics — counts of visits with nothing to connect them to a person.
Leaving this site
The buy buttons take you to Amazon. Once you land there you are on Amazon's site under Amazon's rules, and their privacy policy applies rather than this one. We record only that a button was clicked — never anything about what you go on to do, browse, or purchase. We receive no information back from Amazon, and we are not told whether you bought anything.
Children
The Tower Thief is written for young readers, but this site is a shop window aimed at the grown-ups doing the buying. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children, and in fact the site is not built to collect personal information from anyone: there is no sign-up, no comment box, and no form of any kind to type into.
Your rights, honestly described
Depending on where you live you may have the right to ask what personal data an organisation holds about you, and to have it corrected or deleted. We take those rights seriously, so here is the straight answer about how they apply here.
Because we never store your IP address and the daily pseudonym cannot be reversed, we have no way to find "your" rows — and we won't ask you to hand over personal information just so we can go looking, since that would mean collecting more about you than we do now. In practice there is nothing on file that identifies you and therefore nothing to hand over, correct, or erase. If you would like to talk it through anyway, please write to us.
Changes
If what we collect ever changes, this page changes with it and the date at the top moves. We will not start collecting more and quietly leave this page as it was.
